What does ATAP mean?

The Affiliate Teacher and Assessment Programme, is a new scheme delivered by The Royal Ballet School. The aim is to extend their philosophy to external academies that believe in The Royal Ballet School's ethos.

This programme, offers an innovative training where every student has access to a holistic dance education, taught by teachers who value the autonomy to guide and assess their own students’ learning.

ATAP provides the opportunity to learn about the art form of classical ballet in its entirety: how to perform, to create and to appreciate.

The teacher aims to establish an ideal environment where all students can thrive, instilling a love and understanding of ballet that can last beyond the time spent in studio.

ATAP's philosophy derives from The Royal Ballet School's Model for Optimal Dance Training, and it includes:

  • Body awareness - students will be supported through the aid of body-conditioning exercises, to develop students' awareness of posture, stability in turn-out, placement of leg line and muscle strength.

  • Ballet vocabulary - this includes the development of students' knowledge, understanding, confidence and skill in the performance of selected vocabulary relevant to each level, including foundational, technical and musical skills.

  • Creative practice - development of creative response and understanding of how to improvise, choreograph and appreciate of movements to dance. Students learn vocabulary and performance elements as tools to explore, adapt and arrange new and creative practice.

  • Repertoire study - With the aid of videos, pictures and books, students will learn the main characters, stories, costumes and history of ballet, related to the repertoire relevant to each level. Emphasis is given to the importance of motifs, what they are, and how to identify them. This will encourage students growing their uniqueness, becoming autonomous choreographers.
